Dakota Sew & So Dickinson, North Dakota

This delightful shop is located just over a mile from Interstate 94. Owner Holly Martinson will celebrate the shop’s 20th Anniversary next March, so this is a well established stop in the area. Enter through the front garden; do take time to stop and admire the flowers on the way into the shop!

The fabrics in the shop are arranged like a color wheel, which is the focus of the offerings. Miss Holly finds this approach more successful and timeless for her area, and it does lead to wonderful matching opportunities. With over 1,000 bolts of fabric, I was able to (finally!) match a sample I had carried from home and been trying to match the entire trip. There are solids and blenders and wonderful batiks. Large and small prints are also on hand, shelved by the major color in the pattern. Flannel is available, with lots of children’s prints, and Shannon Cuddle is on hand in 60″ widths. Cotton wide backings are also available.

There are samples here and there throughout the shop, including embroidery, quilting, and crochet, The shop carries yarn as well as fabrics, so do check these out if you are multi-talented. The afghan below is an heirloom and quite impressive in person, and I almost wished I knew someone expecting a son when I saw the adorable onesie…

The shop is a licensed dealer for Janome, HandiQuilter, and Bernina machines, so if you are in the market, do check them out while you are visiting. If you are looking for Bernina feet, check out the collection on hand! Dakota Collectibles Embroidery patterns are available, as well as a nice selection of threads for both sewing and embroidery.

I would plan to be here for between twenty and forty minutes to see everything and be tempted…
