Sue Spargo Folk Art Quilts Uniontown, Ohio

Watch for this sign as you are looking for this shop. It is in an industrial complex less than a mile from Interstate 77; Google Maps will try to take you to the back loading dock. Instead go all the way to the far side of the second building, where the entrance is located. The street number is on the building. Owner Sue Spargo started the business in her home in 2002, and moved into commercial space in 2012.

Miss Sue started Block of the Month clubs when they haven’t been heard of yet, and continues to provide these clubs via mail to hundreds of people a year. She started out quilting very unique quilts, using layering of fabrics and media to get depth. She was also fascinated with wool, and worked to develop the truly vibrant colors for the woolens you will find in this shop. In addition to woolens, there are at least 1,200 bolts of cottons, including solids and blenders, tone on tone, and Grunge. There are also wonderful prints, both large and small, by Kaffe Fassett and M & S Aboriginal fabrics, among others. If you enjoy English Paper Piecing, there is a great selection of papers in multiple shapes and sizes. Hand embroidery fans will find hand dyed Perle cottons, silk ribbons, and floss. Cotton webbing for bags and other trims are here as well. Don’t miss the hand dyed velvet!

The sample at the right is one of the classes offered here, called Fiber Art Collage. The background is quilted, and then other fabrics and fibers layered to make this absolutely beautiful piece of art. There are many samples on display, and a lot are wool, showing off the range of hand dyed colors available.

I took a close-up of a section of the mural shown below – it is simply gorgeous. It hangs in what looks like the break room, but the doors were open so I walked in and admired!

The shop also offers baskets and other items from Fair Trade sources. They are wonderful to look at, and I can think of at least a dozen uses for any one of them! Some are on shelves, while others are hung from the ceiling, but the staff will happily get them down for you.

Please plan to be here for at least 30 to 45 minutes to see everything.
