Housed in a garage that became a quilt shop and then grew, and located just 13 miles from Interstate 95, Jo-Anne Hill’s Calico Basket is wonderful find. The Maine Shop Hop is in August, delayed from April, and this is one of 29 shops on the list. I didn’t get to all of them, but stay tuned. I made it to half of them in the week I traveled around the state!
Calico Basket Quilt Shop has over 8,000 bolts of fabric on hand, ranging from wool to felt to lots of cottons. There is an entire aisle featuring Maine themed fabrics, including this year’s custom Robert Kaufman design for the Maine Shop Hop called “Birds and Berries.” These 10 prints are only available in Maine, and feature both the male and female of each bird with a complimentary berry native to Maine. If you want them, call the shop now before they sell out. There are also batiks, blenders, solids, wide backs, and a wonderful selection of prints that just beg to be used for Stack-n-Whack.
If you enjoy books and patterns, there are hundreds to look through here. Some are in with the fabric, and then there is a aisle that has them all together. Either way, they are wonderful fun to look though!
Don’t miss the samples throughout the shop. They are wonderful just to admire, or as inspiration for your next project. I really enjoyed this “state map” made from all of the different flowers growing in Maine. Plan to spend 30 to 40 minutes here.
