Sew What! a Quilt Shop Wyandotte, Michigan

Watch for the flashing magenta signboard when you are looking for Sew What! It is 10 miles from I75, south of Detroit, and a real treat to explore. Owner Judy Schmidt has some of everything, and if she doesn’t have it, she’ll order it. If you want to learn how to do it, she will find someone to teach you.

This shop is about two thirds store and one third classroom. There is a wide selection of samples available, and patterns or kits for each of them. There are jelly rolls, charm packs, and layer cakes that match.

Wander through the selection of blenders available. I carry some “Dot Strips” with me for fabrics I’m trying to match – no problem here! The ones on the right are the brighter colors (my personal favorites), but there is also a wide selection of neutrals and pastels

Be sure to check out the selection of large scale prints, suitable for Stack -N-Whack. Those blue flowers on the second row seem to be calling my name… Another feature is the sale room, and the sale table – which includes quilt tops that were made as store samples but never quilted. If you enjoy quilting, but not the piecing of the tops, or you simply want a ready to quilt gift idea, this is a great place to look.

There is a selection of wool available, both solids and a few hounds-tooth prints. There are also patterns available for wool applique, so take a few minutes to browse this display as well. Do you feel like you’re being watched? I love the little owl peeking out of the second drawer!

Sew What! carries Acuquilt Go and the dies to go with this system. I’ve used this a few times, and find it really makes the more complicated patterns like the Hunters Star go together much more cleanly. It also does a great job on Drunkard’s Path – it even puts in the little alignment tabs to align the curve centers!

Sew What is a Bernina dealer – with the added bonus that for simpler repairs, Miss Judy does them herself. She sends the more complicated (read time consuming) ones out due to time constraints, but if your travel machine is having issues be sure to ask her what to do about it!

I mentioned the large amount of class space before – this shop has everything from Quilt Camp the first Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of every month from 10 – 4:30 – come one day or all three – to Open Sew on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 to 4:30. There is a class schedule available online and in their newsletter, so be sure to check them all out. This session includes English Paper Piecing, Foundation Paper Piecing, Block of the Month, Machine Applique, and several more.
