Highland Quilts Athena, Oregon

What happens when a storm blows your sign through the front of your shop? Well, you clean up the mess and keep on going, of course! Located just off of OR-11 about 20 miles south of Walla Walla, Washington, this shop is owned by Elaine Shaw, who is a nurse half time and has a cadre of helpers keeping the shop going while she’s working. Their can-do attitude extends into dealing with missing signs and whatever else comes their way, and it was one of the most cheerful shops I’ve visited. They’ve been practicing this attitude for 16 years!

Fabrics include tone on tones in white, black, cream, and ivory, as well as Benartex solids. Blenders are on hand in a wide range of colors, and Grunge is available in plain and dots. Majestic Batiks are on hand, as are large and small prints, including Kaffe Fassett, and a nice selection of flannels. Wide backings include 108″ cottons and 90″ Minkee. Kansas Troubles fabrics are here for Civil War buffs; this line uses the same dyes year after year so things always coordinate. Don’t forget to check out the Charm Packs, Layer Cakes, and Jelly Rolls! Look for Bow Ties, unique to this shop, that are a 6 X 21″ piece that is one third of a Fat Quarter – nice if you do applique! All in all, there are over 5,000 bolts of fabric on hand to keep you looking!

Samples are on display and generally have kits and / or patterns available. There are monthly clubs running most of the time, including a Block of the Month and a Round Robin. There is also a Scrap Club. Please check with the shop directly for more details.

I would plan to spend at least thirty to forty-five minutes here, longer if you get to chatting with the ladies in the back and talking about the projects they’re working on that day… There is a LOT of quilting expertise on the group!
