This delightful shop is the rebirth of the original Sewing Box Quilt Shop in Georgian Place in Somerset. The original owner lost her lease, and decided it was a good time to retire. The shop was sold, and this is the result!
New Owner April Hershberger already owned the old Clapper Building in Myersdale, near her home, so the decision to move the shop there was relatively easy. The building was named after Doris Clapper, one of the founders of the Myersdale Quilt Show, so it has quilting in its bones, so to speak. Miss April worked with the previous owner through the transition, getting to know her customer base, and has maintained the customer service level that was one of the key calling cards of the original shop. Beyond that, this shop is clearly her vision realized. It is less than a mile from US 219, and very easy to find. Expect lots of fabric, lots of samples, and a bright and welcoming floor plan.
About the fabric… There are well over 6,000 bolts on hand, with more flowing in every day. Check out the great selection of solids, not to mention tone on tones in white and ivory. There is a wall of Kaffe Fassett, Grunge in plain and dots, and Civil War and 30’s reproduction choices. Tula Pink, Tilda, Northcott, and thread dyed fabrics by Diamond Textiles are also on hand, Large and small prints, panels, and precuts are here as well. Panels are organized in a notebook by number, so you can browse pictures of t he entire panel and then pull the ones you want from the numbered bins. Don’t miss the wide backings and flannel, not to mention Banyan Batiks!
Classes are available in everything from Chenille techniques to beginning sewing and quilting. Please check the schedule online for specific offerings and times. Many of the samples are class offerings, and patterns and kits are available. Completed samples are sold when the fabric line sells out. There is also a live sale on Wednesdays at 5:30, where new fabrics are introduced.
Miss April is also an accomplished English Paper Piecing expert, and yes, there are classes. Edge to Edge long arm services are available; please call the shop for pricing and lead times.
The shop is a dealer for Janome machines, ranging from smaller “carry to class” machines to larger embroidery and long arm systems, Do check these out if you are in the market for a new machine or system.
I would plan to be here for at least twenty to forty-five minutes to see all of the goodies!
