G Street Fabrics Rockville, Maryland

Years ago, I visited G Street Fabrics in Washington, DC. It has moved to Rockville, Maryland, and if anything it is bigger that it was before. Located about three miles from Interstate 270, owners Joel and Michael Greenzaid moved out of DC several years ago. The shop is about a square block, with machines and offices on the first floor and tons of fabric upstairs. You’ll find fabrics here that you can’t find elsewhere, like mohair by the yard for your winter coat, sequins, and pure silks.

On the quilting front, there are at least 10,000 bolts of quilting cottons. These include batiks, at least 1,000 bolts, African prints, and a great collection of Kaffe Fassett, Robert Kaufman, Moda, Timeless Treasures, and others. There are solids and blenders, tone on tones, and Grunge in plain, dots, and stars. Gingham is on hand, as is flannel and a nice selection of panels. There is a whole section of children’s prints. Wide backings are on hand as well. Bring your favorite pattern or choose one of theirs and start building your next masterpiece. The hardest part is figuring out what to look at first!

This is a tour de force on an embroidery and quilting machine. It will be a bag when it’s done, but for now it is vinyl over fabric, quilted, and then embroidered. It was designed by one of the shop employees, and is well on the way to fabulous! The front pocket will be embroidered cork, shown below. This is just one of the many samples to be seen here.

The shop is a Bernina dealer, so if you’re looking for a machine, plan some time to explore. Did you know Bernina has a Kaffe Fassett machine? Yes, it is quite pretty! Buttons, ribbons, laces, and trims are also available.

I would plan to be here for forty-five minutes to an hour at least, longer if you want to check out the clothing fabrics as well.
