Shady Grove Market & Fabrics Grantsville, Maryland

Take a pleasant ride in the Maryland countryside and visit this wonderful combination quilt shop and market. Owners Teresa and Merv Brennaman bought the shop from his parents four years ago, when they wanted to retire after having the shop since 1986. It started as a truck market going from farm to farm. Then a local quilt shop was for sale, and they bought it. When it outgrew their home, they bought a trailer to house both the market and the fabrics.

The shop is about two and a half miles from Interstate 68, close to the West Virginia border, and is in a very rural area. The feel is very much like an old time country store, where you can get fabric, lunch, and take something home for dinner, too. There is a nice selection of fabrics, just over 500 bolts. There are solids and blenders, and tone on tones. Large and small prints, as well as batiks, are also on hand. Batiks are shelved with their color wave, so I almost missed them. Once I caught on, I found a bunch of them. Panels (two shelves worth) and wide backings are also available. Don’t forge tot check out the flannels and fleece! There is also a selection of yarn available.

They have a wonderful style for the quilt kits – one completed block is shown with the kit, so you have a working sample. When the stock runs low, they make more kits. There are also wonderful patterns, and pre-printed hand embroidery selections by Jack Dempsey Needle Art. I think they have just about every one made, from pillow cases to quilt blocks to whole cloth quilt tops. Floss to complete these is also here.

I would plan to be here twenty to thirty minutes, and pick up lunch or snacks before you leave!
