Suppose you have a quilt shop in the country, and you want a name that reflects that. What better than “The Chicken Coop”? Easily remembered, suits the area, and has given owner Valerie Retzlaff a theme for the past 27 years. The shop is located just under two miles from the Yellowhead, AB-16, another Canadian main artery. You’ll want to turn on 51st Avenue and enter through the side door. The door on the corner of 50 Street and 51 Avenue is not used. Note that in this town, streets go north – south and avenues go east – west.
Once you’re inside – check out the fabric! Over 4,000 bolts on hand, including plain Grunge, solids and blenders, and tone on tones. There are large and small prints, great for the Laura Heine collage patterns that are on hand. Wonderful batiks are here, and a nice selection of clothing fabrics (not included in the bolt count). Panels are also available, but note there are no wide backings. More about why in a bit. Don’t miss the queen size quilt kits on hand, as well as a great selection of patterns.
The shop does custom long arm, and rather than carry a few wide backings, there is a fairly large selection of 45″ fabric that the customer can choose from to make the backing for their quilt. Miss Valerie has found that her customers prefer this, since they are not limited to what is available in 108″ wide. Please call the shop for details on pricing and lead times for this service. They are also making and donating quilts for Ukrainian refugees arriving in the area. Just for fun, check out Miss Valerie’s “Quilting With Baba” episodes on the shop Facebook page!
Don’t miss the many samples in the shop as well. I never saw Laura Heine’s fox collage made up before, and this one is adorable. I would plan to be here for at least thirty to forty-five minutes to see everything.
