The Quilting Barn Earlton, Ontario, Canada

Located less than a half mile from the Trans Canada Highway (Ontario 11), this shop is the “home” shop for the Quilts for Survivors group I reviewed last Thanksgiving – even though it is a two hour drive! Shop owner Suzanne Gauthier has a wonderful shop, and a deep heart for the survivor project as well. Mark your calendars; the shop is hosting a Quilt Show September 7-9, 2023, with 200 quilts, vendors, and a tearoom, to be held at the at the Earlton Arena. Watch the website for more details!

There is a great selection of fabric here, including solids, tone on tones, and blenders, including Northcott’s Canvas line (not really canvas, but printed to look like it), as well as large and small prints. Kits and panels are available, and there are over 100 different wide backs to make it easier to complete your project – I do prefer a one piece backing; piecing a back is a bit of a pain! All in all there are over 1,500 bolts of fabric to entice you, and that doesn’t include the upholstery fabric. The shop also sells Barn-wood quilt blocks, made with rescued barn wood by Miss Suzanne’s brother and absolutely beautiful. Sample bags and patterns by Blue Collar, a Canadian company, are also available.

Don’t miss the samples throughout the shop – I honestly took more pictures of samples here than of fabric, because there we so many and they were so wonderful. Most of the samples have patterns to match, the rest are classes or Block of the Month. There is an in house retreat center with lodging at the hotel 20 minutes away. Classes are back in session, and there is a wonderful design wall in the classroom. Long arm supplies are also available. Quilting is done in house, and yes, long arm service is available. It is custom, not edge to edge, so please contact the shop for pricing and lead times.

The shop is a licensed Viking dealer, so do check out the machines while you’re visiting. They run from desktop to long arm systems, and whatever you may need in between. I actually carry a Viking Emerald in my micro camper when I travel, so I can recommend them as workhorses – I run about 10 KM of thread through min a year.

I would plan to be here for at least 30 to 45 minutes.
