Roadside Market – Elaine’s Corner Hill City, Minnesota

It’s a gas station. It’s a liquor store. It’s a bakery. And… it’s a Quilt Shop! Elaine’s Corner, inside Roadside Market, is far and away the most unique shop I have visited to date. Owned by Elaine Klennert, it is about 25 miles from US Route 2, but when I was told there was a quilt shop inside of a gas station and liquor store, I had to come looking. It was definitely worth the detour! When you search for it on Google Maps, it comes up as a convenience store. Don’t be fooled. Folks around here quilt, and Miss Elaine makes sure they have the materials to do so.

This amazing shop carries over 750 bolts of fabric inside of two aisles of the convenience store. There are solids and blenders, tone on tones, and batiks. Large (suitable for Stack-n-Whack) prints are available, as well as smaller prints. There is even a selection of wool for those of you who enjoy working with this medium. Stonehenge Gradation strip sets and Bali Pops (think Jelly Rolls, but flat packed) are available, as well as panels and wide backings. There is a section of patriotic fabrics, as well as holiday fabrics. Fat quarters are stored near the parent bolt, and there is a nice selection of notions and rulers. There are also completed quilts for sale, so if you need one and don’t have time to sew, stop and look at what is on hand.

Yes, even in this limited space, there are samples. Many are hung in the store area, so be sure to look up while you’re shopping. I was very impressed at how well the space is utilized. It feels like a full sized shop while you are looking at the fabrics and so on, and then you look up and realize it is tucked into a convenience store!

Please plan at least 20 to 30 minutes here.
