By The Yard Quilt Shop Rayville, Missouri

Located between Interstate 70 and Highway 36, this shop started in Sandra Austin’s home, then took over the garage, and five years later her husband and son built her a new building so they’d have room to work on the farm equipment. Miss Sandra started quilting with a fascination with the photograph taken of the Helix Nebula by the Hubble Telescope, and through an amazing chain of events was able to get permission to make a copy of it as a quilt. The story of all of the May 9th’s involved is a wonderful testimony, so do be sure to ask her to tell it while you’re there.

Fabric rules here, with over 2,000 bolts on hand. Styles range from batiks to large and small prints to solids, blenders, and tone on tones. There are also wide backings, and a lot of wonderful panels. Don’t miss the Layer Cakes, Charm Packs, and Jelly Rolls, some in matching fabrics. There is also flannel, including Layer Cakes and Charm Packs. Check out the lighting on the fabric shelves – the LED lights we all love for our sewing machines are mounted under the shelf above, so the fabric is well lit and shows true colors.

The Helix Nebula, shown at the right, is one of many samples displayed throughout the shop.. Don’t miss the detail of the quilting in the center, shown below, but you really need to see it. There are patterns and kits available for most of them.

Yes, the dress fits Miss Sandra, and is for Pioneer Days… The samples behind it going up the stairs are wonderful. She will also show you how to make two color binding, in case your quilt is two completely different colors front and back, and you want it to be reversible.

Long arm services are available; please call for pricing and lead times, and to discuss the style of quilting you would like for your masterpiece.

Plan to spend at least 30 minutes here to see everything. This was actually the last shop I was able to visit on the Highway 36 Quilt Trail. One had active COVID cases and so had to be missed, and I was unable to get to the last one due to time constraints and their hours.

Stop back on Thursday as the North American Shop Hop leaves Missouri. Where do you think I will go next?
