The Quilt Shoppe Wheeling, Missouri

Located just three and a half miles from Highway 36, this wonderful “Mom and Pop Hobby Shop” was a delightful find, and on a paved road. Owned by Charla and Channing Winnett, they follow the local weather – closed if schools are closed – so if you are planning a winter visit do make sure they are open before driving out. It is also out in farm country, so watch for livestock and large equipment along the way!

There is a surprising amount of fabric here, over 1,600 bolts, which to my mind is a lot more than a hobby! Of course, my stash is upwards of 2,000 yards, so I’m not necessarily one to judge… Either way, fabrics include batiks, 30’s Reproductions, and lots of great large prints suitable for Stack-n-Whack. Add to that blenders, solids, and tone on tones. Wide backings are also available. There are also patterns, and the shop carries Deb Tucker Studio 180 Rulers. Miss Charla can show you how to use any one of them that catches your fancy, so do ask. I have the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star and the Wing Clipper, and they do work well.

There is a nice collection of samples to admire, and the shop also offers long arm services. Please call for pricing and lead times. The quilt below left was from last year’s Highway 36 Quilt Trail, and was made with batiks. This year’s ran into fabric difficulties due to COVID, so kits for this shop’s blocks were available, but the decision was made to save the fabrics for the kits rather than completing the whole quilt. I saw this at several shops. Fabrics are starting to come in more regularly, but some orders arriving now were due a year ago.

You have the potential to spend thirty to forty minutes just looking at and selecting fabric here, so please plan your visit accordingly.
