Continuing south from Seattle, this shop is located about nine miles from Interstate 5 in tiny Onalaska, population 621 in 2010, but don’t let the size of the town fool you! Owner Maggie Woods is the local insurance lady and quilt wizard, and the shop was running a Judy Niemeyer class, among other activity, the day I visited.
There are 1,200 bolts of new quilting fabric here, in addition to a room of “redeemed” fabrics that are available at a a very reasonable price. Sales of these fabrics fund batting and materials for Linus Project and charity quilts. They are not all cotton, but there is some fun fabric to be had for sewing projects and crazy quilt embellishments.
In the quilting fabrics, there are white and ivory tone on tones, blenders, solids, Grunge in plain, stars, and metallic, and batiks. Large and small prints and wide backings make up the remainder of the offerings, and there are some wonderful options for Stack-n-Whack. New fabrics are on their own spinner; do check for deals on these. Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, Layer Cakes, and fat and skinny quarters are also offered.
Miss Maggie also designs quilts. She will do a custom design if asked, but do give her time to create it in addition to her other responsibilities. The one at the right is stunning in person, and there is a pattern available. If you want to do something wonderful with a panel, check out the ones shown below, and then the patterns for them. I love the movement in the diagonals on the first one, and it is also an original design.
This is a customer quilt, made at the last Judy Niemeyer class, and there was another class going on the day I visited. This shop is the hub of the community, and as one customer put it, “the happy place.”
Plan to spend at least 20 to 30 minutes here, longer if there is a class going on and you enjoy talking with the ladies…
