Located just two miles from Interstate 84, this is the second of two stores owned by Spencer Carter, the great-grandson-in-law of Ace Wimmer, who opened the store in 1922. Mr. Carter is the fourth generation to be serving the local quilting community. The two shops are similar, but each has its own personality and the samples are certainly unique to each location!
There are over 1,000 bolts of fabric here, ranging from wool to quilting cottons in solids, blenders, and tone on tones. Prints both large and small are here, with some nice candidates for the Stack-n-Whack enthusiast. Plain color Grunge and batiks round out the offerings. There are also kits for various sized quilts available. You can also join a selection of Fabric Clubs, where you pay a set price and get a certain amount of fabric every month – please check online for more details on these.
Samples are the big story here. Most of the ones on display are also classes, so you can learn how to make then for yourself. I love the One Block Wonder around the panel! I had not seen this before, and it’s a great technique. I have used panels to make One Block Wonder quilts; including the panel is a nice added touch. I had a great time trying to match the hexes to the panel to see where they started out. Other samples are also classes. The white with flowers is also jeweled, and is lovely in person. Both of the first two below are samples from the machine quilting class. There is also a great collection of Kimberbell Embroidery patterns to add to the fun.
Speaking of machines, the shop is a registered Pfaff and Baby Lock dealer, and teaches classes so you can learn to get the most from your new machine. Do look these over if you are in the market for a new machine, or are ready to upgrade to something larger. Repairs are handled at the Layton store if needed.
The shop also carries Koala Sewing Machine Cabinets. If you have not had a chance to see these, you need to stop in and look. They open up large enough to support sewing a king sized quilt, and fold together for storage when you need the room for something else. Please plan twenty to thirty minutes here.

Love the zigzag border following the blocks on the one block wonder panel. Not “hard” if hand finished but you do have to pay attention.
