Sew Creative Salisbury, Missouri

This is my fifth stop on the Highway 36 Quilt Trial, a shop hop that runs from April 1 to October 31, 2021, along Highway 36 across northern Missouri. Unfortunately, my fourth stop has closed as of this writing, although it will still show on the Passport as # 11 if you decide to do this Shop Hop. They are numbered west to east; I am traveling east to west.

Salisbury is about 24 miles south of Highway 36. Owner Donna McAdams absolutely loves miniature quilts, and you can see evidence of this throughout the shop. Wonderful choices for Stack-N-Whack are here, as well as smaller prints. Solids, tone on tone, and blenders, Grunge in solids, dots, and stars, and batiks complete the selection. With over 750 bolts of fabric on hand, you are sure to find something that just has to follow you home. There are also Fossil Ferns, one of my favorite fabric lines, and panels.

The owner has a ladder from the grain elevator from the farm where she grew up mounted on the wall behind the counter. Between each rung are some of the miniature quilts she loves.

This flamingo demonstrates a technique I had never seen before, called a “Paint by Numbers” or Mosaic quilt. The entire piece is about 12 X 16, and the fabrics are cut in pieces and placed on a stick paper according to a numbered grid. Then a backing is added for the “mortar.” I bought a kit to play with; I couldn’t resist. What a great way to use up small scraps! The finished piece gets net over the front before quilting, so the pieces stay put. There are videos on YouTube showing how to do these; please call the shop for the patterns.

There are many other samples in the shop, particularly ones using panels. It is often hard to figure out what to do with a panel that you like once you have it; this shop will solve that for you.

Whatever you do, do not miss seeing this quilt in the second room. It was made with pieces of the owner’s mother and grandmother’s lace work, and it is exquisite. The photograph truly does not do it justice; it needs to be seen in person. I took a closer picture of one block just to show the workmanship and detail present in the quilt. From the snow on the roof to the smoke coming out of the chimney, it is amazing! I spent at least 20 minutes just looking at this quilt, so allow yourself at least that much time here!

Stop back on Monday as the North American Shop Hop continues along Highway 36. I have time for one more shop before I need to move on toward Washington State. I’ll need to catch the rest on the way back to Ohio.
