Elkins Sewing Center Elkins, West Virginia

This bustling shop is about eight miles from US 250, and about a block from the station for the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad. Owned by Sue Pifer, it has been serving the local quilting and sewing community since 1982 – in this location for 25 years. The shop started with garment sewing supplies, and expanded over the years to include quilting fabrics, which are now the main focus.

Window displays are shared with local community groups, to highlight their efforts. The shop sold eleven MILES of elastic last year, and enough fat quarters for masks that, if they were stacked, they would be as tall as a blue whale is long!

Fabric rules the roost here. With over 3,500 bolts in house, plan to spend some time looking. There are solids and blenders, as well as Grunge. Batiks are present and accounted for, as are prints both large and small. I saw some wonderful Stack-N-Whack candidates! Add to that Kaffe Fassett, Tula Pink, and some wonderful Ombre dots. Shannon Cuddle and wide backs are here as well.

The shop is a registered Viking Husqvarna dealer. Take some time to check out the machines if you are in the market. I use a Viking Emerald 116, a real workhorse, that travels with me in my micro camper.

Samples are hung throughout the shop, and most have patterns and/or kits available. Don’t miss the Jack Dempsey hand embroidery patterns. Classes include both quilting techniques and garment sewing classes for both adults and children . Please check online or call the shop for more details.

When you’re done enjoying all of the fabric, spend some time enjoying the town. You’ll notice there are no parking meters – but there were flowers at each parking space while I was there. These are seasonal. There is a group called “Our Town” that creates and places these. There are Flowers in the spring and summer, Scarecrows in the fall, and Gnomes in the winter. The town also hosts the Augusta Heritage Festival, featuring had work hand made instruments, and and hand dyed fabrics. Come for the festival, and enjoy both the festival and the shop. Information is available on Google. Plan at least 30 to 45 minutes here.
