University of Sewing @ The Tailored Fit Bloomington, Indiana

This two for one shop is located just about two miles from Interstate 69, and is a great find for those who sew both quilts and clothing. Owned by Margaret Fette, one side of the store is a tailored clothing makers dream, with classes to help if this is new to you. The other side has fabric for quilts and clothing. The building started life as a lumber yard, and then grew up to be a quilt shop.

There is a great selection of fabric here, over 1,200 bolts of quilting fabric, plus clothing fabrics from blends to wool. Quilting fabrics include solids from RJR, batiks, a lot of blenders, and a great selection of aboriginal fabrics. Miss Margaret shops worldwide. You will not find Moda here, since everyone carries it, but you will find African sun dyed fabric, wonderful prints, and a lot of fabrics I haven’t seen elsewhere. Wide backs include Northcott, and some great large flower prints that have a Monet feel to them. Prints are both large and small, with Stack-n-Whack candidates and a nice collection of 1930’s reproductions. Wool comes by the bolt as well as in smaller patches. For those making quilts for college students or alumni, IUP fabrics are on hand, while Perdue is coming soon.

Classes moved to video online during COVID shutdowns, and continue that method. A few are back in person; please call the shop and check offerings and venues. There is a “Block Every Two Weeks” making these wonderful small blocks that teach a wealth of techniques. This would be a great group for both beginners and more advanced quilters. I’ve been quilting over 45 years, but I haven’t tackled some of these blocks yet!

There are samples throughout the shop. The ladies were kind enough to show me a couple that were recently finished, but not yet hung. I love the half square triangles with the Aboriginal fabrics! The flannel quilt would be great on a cool evening, and it’s big enough for two – or a bed. The kimono was brought back from Korea by Miss Margaret’s father, and is simply beautiful.

The shop is a registered Bernina dealer, and sells both Bernina and Bernette, the smaller machine that is great for travel, They also sell the larger quilting frames, both sit down and standing. If you are looking for a great sewing space, and have the room for it, check out the sewing table! I would have to skip a couple of the extension tables… Software for your embroidery machine is also available. I spent close top an hour here; I would allow at least 30 minutes.
