Pins and Needles Farmington, Maine

We’re still enjoying the mountains of central Maine. Farmington is about 50 miles northeast of Augusta, and owner Cheri Tompkins looks after both the quilters and the knitters in her area. She did long arm quilting in her home for 19 years before moving into an historic building downtown about 14 years ago.

This shop is a Stack-n-Whack lover’s dream. There are over 4,000 bolts of fabric, and easily 500 of them would work for this technique. Add to that wool in bolts (do you sew clothing?), batiks, blenders, and solids. There is also some Minky for babies of all ages to enjoy.

Have you ever wanted to do a quilt with geometric prints? This collection ranges from subtle to bold, and would make a stunning modern quilt or accents for a more traditional style. Don’t miss seeing them in person when you’re in the shop.

For the knitters in the crowd – I know a lot of folks quilt and knit – there is a great selection of yarns. Various wools and some synthetics are represented. I’m a terrible knitter, but I do crochet, so this part of the shop was great fun as well.

Where would we be without buttons of all shapes and sizes? Embellish quilts, make clothing, put accents on knit hats, use as centerpieces for quilted flowers – the possibilities are endless! Grandma’s button box never had buttons like these.

There are lots of samples to admire, and the staff is more than willing to help you select fabrics for the pattern of your choice. Plan to spend 30 to 40 minutes here. Please call ahead during the COVID restrictions for an appointment, or to see if these are no longer necessary.
