Dark Star Fabrics Phillips, Maine

Phillips is in the central Maine mountain region, about 21 miles from Rangeley and Loon Lake.   Enjoy the scenery on the way to Deb Black and Rachelle Knight’s wonderful shop.  The name comes from a Grateful Dead song – I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out which one!

This mother and daughter team has combined a two family house into a shop on the first floor, and a long arm service on the second floor, with two long arm systems to complete your quilts .  There are over 1,200 bolts of fabric here to tempt you, with at least 150 different bolts of Australian fabrics, the largest collection I have seen so far.  Add to those solids and blenders, batiks, and prints, prints, and more prints.   They also carry a great selection of books, patterns and kits.

If you are looking for notions, check out the selection here.  There is a bit of everything, from rulers to cutters to templates.  For Bonnie Hunter fans, there is even her Essential Triangle tool.  I have this and love it.  It’s the easiest way I’ve found to make half and quarter square triangle blocks with minimal waste and no trimming.

Don’t miss the great selection of panels.  I saw several here that I had not seen elsewhere, and a couple that were extremely tempting to Stack-n-Whack, like the garden window on the right.  Yes, I use panels for that!

This Snails Trail quilt is Dark Star Fabrics’ quilt using the Maine Shop Hop fabrics, and it is stunning.  Look for the custom line of Maine Birds and Berries, and get them before they are gone!  I would not have thought of using them this way, but it is quite beautiful. It is only one of the many samples on display.

Plan to spend 30-40 minutes enjoying this shop.
