Quilt Farm Part 1 – The Fabric Boston, New York

The Quilt Farm, owned by Isabelle Gernatt Schmidt, is located just about 12 miles from Interstate 90 Exit 57. It is housed in a building that was a dairy barn from 1939 to 1978. After the barn had been empty for 12 years, Miss Isabelle and a partner opened a shop for machine and hand quilting. She is now the sole owner, and the shop has grown into a fabric store that is housed on both floors, and a major source for finished bed quilts that is on the second floor, along with a spacious classroom.

Today we’re looking at the fabric and patterns – we’ll look at quilts of Thursday. The Flannel and Panel room is immediately inside the entrance. Out in the main shop, fabrics are shelved in groups by color, in alcoves or islands formed by the shelving. Most prints are in with their major color group. What this means is that if you are looking for a specific color family, you can see all of the choices in a small area – and with over 10,000 bolts to look through, this is very convenient!

The second floor has both a Christmas and a Halloween room, with fabrics for these holidays available year round. This allows you to start those projects whenever you have time. If you sew for Craft Shows, you can get the material you need whenever you wish.

At the bottom of the stairs is the Book Room. I’m guessing this is at least 12 X 12 feet, with enough racks of books and patterns to keep you occupied for hours! I spent over an hour here and did not get to look at everything. If you can’t find what you are looking for, ask…

This shop is temporarily closed due to the quarantine, but it is well worth planning a trip for when things are open again. I would allow at least 2 hours here.
