The Sewing Box Quilt Shop Somerset, Pennsylvania

If you are driving down the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) by Somerset, get off and take a break at Georgian Place and visit The Sewing Box Quilt Shop. Owned by Wendy Airesman and a part of the area for the last eight years, the shop doubled their available space by moving into two suites combined last March, and continues to grow.

This shop is a great place to learn or perfect your quilting skills. There was an Open Sew in progress when I was in, and a collection of ladies were working on current projects or getting help with new ones. Open Sew is every Thursday, so bring your machine if you will be in the area and have some time. More on classes later…

There is a great selection of fabrics here. I love Stack-N-Whack, and there we so many candidates that it was extremely hard to leave with my budget intact. Not just prints, but an army of blenders and batiks march in orderly rows around the shop. There is also a selection of Tula Pink fabrics, and a brand new Chong A Hwang‎ from Timeless Treasures (my FAVORITE designer!) that came out in October – and had to follow me home! Cork and colored plastic canvas are also available. You will also find Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, and Layer Cakes. All of these have patterns in case you aren’t sure what to do with them. Kits for various sizes of quilts are available both in the shop and online.

The Sewing Box is also a dealer for Janome Sewing Machines. These are great for daily use, and they also make a great portable for travel and classes – ask my oldest sister; she has one and carries it to my house in Ohio from northern New York regularly. Check out the latest while you’re in the store.

Part of the ongoing commitment to teaching includes several Block of the Month groups that are in progress. Miss Wendy also teaches at local Guilds. There is a Demo Night in March and October for new fabrics and tools, as well as the annual Row by Row. The Sewing Box participates in three separate Shop Hops during the year. Check out their website for more classes and scheduled activities, as these change with the seasons and new ones are being added regularly. Long Arm service is also available; please call for details.

Plan to be here at least 45 minutes. There are other shops in Georgian Place to occupy non-quilting family members while you shop, and restaurants to get a bite to eat before getting back on the road.
