I had an event in Michigan, so I crossed over the border into Ontario for a look at some Canadian shops. Ella Quilts is a dynamic shop about 12 miles from Detroit’s Ambassador Bridge in Tecumseh, Ontario, near Windsor. Named after owner Linda Maika’s grandmother, this shop has something going on everywhere you look.
Be careful of Google Maps – the address on Google is not correct; the owner is trying to correct this, but the address below is the correct location. The shop sits back from the road, almost behind the neighboring businesses. Watch for it next to Tecumseh Satellite, about 100 feet back from the road.
The store has two long arm machines they use to quilt for customers. They have just expanded into an additional room, and are in the process of organizing and rearranging to make best use of the new space. Enjoy a close look at the samples while they work on the new layout!
Stroll around the shop and look at all of the kits and pre-cuts. Many also have a sewn version if you don’t quilt or are in need of something now. One of the unique items is “Walker Totes.” These go on a walker to allow the user to carry what they need with them. They are available in two styles as kits or already sewn.
There are panels, prints, batiks, and blenders, as well as a lot of kits. In addition to the Walker Totes, there are kits for reusable grocery bags. These can also be purchased sewn up.
Let’s take a closer look at what’s on top of that shelf full of fabric – Ice Cream Sundae containers? Yes! Pick up a Fat Quarter Sundae while you’re visiting. I promise they are calorie free!
Another service the shop provides is the creation of memory quilts. These can be made as a gift to honor someone living, or as a memorial for the family or loved ones of someone who has passed. Stop in and discuss this with Linda or her daughter Laurie if this is something you are interested in having done.
