Happy Black Friday!!
Fifteen years ago, Terry Simon had a dream to create a haven for quilters, similar to a ladies country club, where ladies could go and relax and fellowship over a shared love of quilting and other crafts. Less than a mile from I77 in Canton, Ohio, is Angelics A Quilter’s Haven, which is her wonderful implementation of that dream.
Terry’s husband Ed refers to himself as the “shop husband” and a silent partner in the venture. He is also the machine repair person, so he is perhaps not as silent as he says! With the shop representing both Baby Lock and Bernina machines, he keeps quite busy. New machines come with one on one classes to teach you how to best use them, taught by shop staff.
Miss Terry is an award winning amateur quilter as well – the quilt on the right won the Ohio Arts Council Award at the 2017 Ohio State Fair. She has written a book that is the complete pattern for this piece and is available in the shop. You can pick it up while you are there. She has anther award winning quilt tucked away in the office – but she will happily show it to you! Make sure you read the explanation of the colors and design upgrade on the back.
This shop is unique in the range of crafts offered. The boxes at the right are made with “Cartonnage.” In ancient Egypt, this was the process used to layer linens and papyrus to make mummy cases. In modern times, it is fabric layered and glued over cardboard to make treasure boxes. Want to learn how? There is a class for that at Angelics.
We often joke about learning Basket Weaving. At this shop, you can actually do it. The basket on the left is a class sample. The shop also carries a line of Fair Trade baskets from Ghanna.
There are the standard Block of the Month and other quilting classes. Then there is Gypsy Wife, done as a section of the month. This quilt doesn’t break nicely into blocks, but it does break nicely into 12 sections.
When you’re done looking at all of the samples, don’t forget to take some time to look at the fabrics! Finally, check out the Ladies Room, with it’s display of antique doll clothes and ladies unmentionables.
If you’re family is going to the Football Hall of Fame, make a detour to see this shop. The coffee is always on, and there is a “Husband Chair” for the non-quilting significant other to enjoy coffee and a magazine while you shop.
