Atomic City Quilts and Close-Knit Yarn Cooperative Los Alamos, New Mexico

As you might guess from the title, this is a two for one shop. Located in Los Alamos, home of the research facility that developed the atomic bomb during WWII, this shop requires a beautiful drive up the mountain to what feels like the middle of nowhere, but is worth the trip, both for the shop and the history. One of the views is shown below. Owners Shelly Kuropatwinski (Quilts) and Mary Fellman (Yarn) take turns working the combined shop, but are both familiar with both product lines.

There are around 500 bolts of fabric here, ranging from solids and blenders to wonderful prints. Flannels are also on hand. There is also a selection of pre-cuts, including Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, Candies (2 X 2), and Layer Cakes. Don’t miss the fat quarters that are stored near the parent bolts. The button collection is a lot of fun, with a lot of unique styles and shapes. Wander to the other half of the store and check out the yarns. I had my sister with me, and she is a knitter and was quite impressed. Check out the Cascade sock yarns in just about any color you could want, as well as some local offerings. I know how to knit, but I rarely do it, while Esther almost has her knitting along – and never buys socks!

Then there is a whole selection of completed gift items for sale, ranging from place mats and baby items to tortilla warmers and bowl cozies. Profits from these are going to help defer the cost of making the local church ADA compliant.

Don’t miss the samples around the shop, of both quilted and knit items. Pythagoras’s Lute appears deceptively simple at first glance, but those angles are all progressing in the spiral. There is a kit available; please call for pricing. Cards are also available for local long arm shops.

Check out the samples on the knitting side as well. Miss Mary is working on a sampler type piece that could easily be seen as a knitted quilt. I would plan to spend twenty to thirty minutes in the shop, and and hour or more visiting the historical sites in the area.

  1. Thank you so much for your kind write-up! It’s also kind of you to pretend I’ll get around to finishing that blanket ever xD
