Needle & Thread – Wooded Hamlet Designs Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Located Right outside of Gettysburg on PA 116 (Fairfield Road), this wonderful shop is great for quilters and Civil War re-enactment buffs. Owner Darlene Grube has been serving the area for over 37 years. There is an extensive selection (at least 400 bolts by my count) of 60″ wide woolens in various weights suitable for coats, dresses, and uniforms. If you want to sew a winter coat, this is the place to shop!

You will find between 12,000 and 14,000 bolts of fabric here, and at least 10,000 of that is quilting cotton. There are several aisles of Civil War reproduction fabrics, as well as solids, tone on tones, and blenders. There is a great selection of Fossil Fern fabrics (one of my personal favorites) as well as batiks and large and small prints. Kits for Downton Abbey and American Heritage are also available. There are literally hundreds of panels to choose from, as well as wide backings in various colors and patterns. Jelly Rolls and Tote Bag Kits are also on hand.

Samples are near the materials to make them, as well as hung to display. I would start at one corner and go aisle by aisle, and bring a shopping cart… There are dozens of trims and laces available, in both modern and Civil War shades. Buttons are also on hand, for shirts, coats, and uniform reproductions. Buttons and trims for Civil War costuming are available under the name of Wooded Hamlet Designs, which is housed inside the shop.

I spent easily two hours here, and I’m sure I missed something, so I would plan at least an hour.

There is a Civil War hospital down the road that is worth a visit as well, not to mention the Civil War battlefields in the area.

  1. Sounds like the place for any re-enactor, lightweight wool for clothes is close to unobtainium (I’m SCA about to.hit the first Pennsic in three years myself).
