Located less than one half mile from Interstate 83, this interesting shop is a nice break from driving. Owner Deb Bender is six weeks at this new location, but the shop has been in the area for 12 years. She was waiting for her permanent shelving when I visited – but that didn’t mean things were not organized! The name “Handwerks” is a nod to her German heritage, where “handwerk” is a craftsman or artisan.
There are well over 3,500 bolts if fabric here, organized by color wave and style. There are some great prints, both large and small, and a nice collection of patriotic fabrics. There are solids and blenders, and really nice batiks. There are also wonderful wide backs, both neutrals and prints, including come great flowers. Wool is also available. There are Aboriginal prints from M&S. I like this company, because they acknowledge the designer on the selvage. They also publish a review of the symbols used and their meanings. Don’t miss the patterns, Fat Quarter Bundles, Jelly Rolls, Charm Squares, and Layer Cakes. If you have a completed top you’d like to have finished, this shop is a drop off and pick up point for local long armers. Please call the shop for more details as to how to contact these folks.
Handwerks includes all kind of needle arts. There is a wonderful selection of embroidery flosses. There are several embroidery guilds in the area, so if you do hand needlework, check them out.
I also had a great discussion with Miss Deb about Needle or Bobbin Lace, a style of lace hand done with multiple bobbins. There is also a great collection of silk ribbons, buttons, and beads for doing embellishments and other crafts. Take time to check though these, as they are wonderful for Crazy Quilts as well.
Samples were not hung yet; these were waiting for permanent shelving. I would plan to spend at least thirty minutes here.
