The Fabric Center Carlisle, Pennsylvania

This delightful shop, located just under four miles from Interstate 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike), is in the Carlisle Historic District and has been serving the local community for sixty years. Owner Captain Richard Raudabaugh, USN, retired, opened the store when his son Brian was born. Now Brian and his wife, Debbie, run the store. You will probably need to park in the high rise garage off of Pomfret Street, just before the shop, as street parking is extremely limited. It only took me two trips around the block to figure this out, but the shop was worth the effort!

Fabric rules the shelves here. With over 8,500 bolts on hand, you are sure to find several styles that will need to come home with you. Christmas is on hand year round. There is also a Patriotic section. Fabrics brands include Fusion II by Quilting Treasures, solids and prints be Tilde, and Riley Blake, to name just a few. There are blenders and tone on tones. Batiks and Civil Ware fabrics are here, as are large and small prints of just about any color you’d like to have. There are Layer Cakes, Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, and Candies (2 1/2″ square sets). Don’t miss the large collection of wide backings to complete your project.

There are many samples on display, with patterns and some kits available. Classes are back in session, so do check out their website for the class schedule, or sign up for their newsletter. There is thread from Gutterman and Mettler, and a nice selection of fusible interfacing – think stabilizers for T-Shirt quilts. The shop is also a pick-up and drop-off location for local long armers. There is also a collection of trims for your crazy quilts.

Please plan at least thirty to forty minutes here to see everything
