Southwest Decoratives & Kokopelli Quilting Company Albuquerque, New Mexico

Located less than a mile from Interstate 25, I missed this shop due to time constraints when I was in Albuquerque last year, so I made sure to see it on the way through this year – and I am so glad that I did! It really is a two in one store. Owner Mary-Jo McCarthy and the shops were featured in Quilt Sampler in their Fall/Winter edition in 2013, and the offerings have only gotten better.

The shop features over 6,000 bolts of fabric, with about 500 of them being Southwestern themed prints, so if you want to make a Southwestern quilt, this is the place to come shopping! There are also solids, blenders, a great collection of tone on tone prints, and smaller prints. Do also check out the great prints for the Stack-n-Whack enthusiast! I found an ombre background I had been searching for among their collection. Christmas fabrics are available year round, and there is a great selection of wide backs to complete your masterpiece. A wide selection of Layer Cakes, Charm Packs, and Jelly Rolls are available. Patterns for clothing, embroidery (both hand and machine), and cross stitch are available, as well as cross stitch fabric by the yard.

Step into the back half of the shop, turn around, and look up! These framed examples of traditional tribal motifs cover the wall, and are wonderful. They are not the only samples available, either. Check out sample quilts and clothing hung throughout the shop, most with patterns and many with kits. You can also make your own “kit”, and if you need help selecting fabrics or colors just ask.

Gammill Quilting Systems and Elna Sewing machines are also offered. Long Arm Services are available; please call for pricing and lead times. Plan to be in the shop for at least 30 minutes; longer if you are looking at machines.
