Less than a mile from the Interstate 465 Bypass north of Indianapolis is a lovely find called Quilt Quarters. This shop has been serving the area for 30 years – 16 years under previous owner Kaye England, and 14 years under Terri Gunn, the current owner, who purchased the shop from Ms. England when she “retired.” Miss Kaye is still writing books, designing fabric for Wilmington, and designing quilt patterns under her own line.
Start by browsing through the samples and the fabric. With over 6,000 bolts to choose from, you are sure to find a few you cannot do without. I got into a long discussion about Bonnie Hunter’s current Mystery Quilt, and spent some time sharing pictures of my fabric choices and looking at what some other folks were buying – not to mention the scrap possibilities! Check out these cool looking packs of trims from Renaissance Ribbons. If you make clothing or any kind of bags, these have a lot of potential! Go bold, and use ribbons to edge blocks in a Crazy Quilt, or go back to the 1960’s and trim your blue jeans with them.
Wilmington Fabrics is producing packs of color matched 2 1/2″ strips. I tend to use this width for Log Cabins, and these are perfect for that applications! Make a gradient in or out to give depth to your blocks. There are also matching charm packs, so you can really play!
Quilt Quarters is a dealer and repair center for Bernina Sewing Machines. Oh, and they do carry a little bit of thread… In addition, they carry Acuquilt Go! Cutting Systems and Westalee Quilting Rulers. If you haven’t seen these rulers, stop in and explore. They allow you to do guided free motion on your home machine, and there is a class to help you learn to use them and the possibilities.
I spent almost 90 minutes here – I would plan for at least an hour.
