Located just over three miles from US Route 30 on the main street through Bird-in-Hand, this shop is har to miss. There are completed quilts on display outside (weather permitting, of course) that change daily. Owners Glenn and Ruth Miller have had the shop for quite some time, and the staff is extremely knowledgeable, so plan to be here for awhile! There is a wonderful selection of completed quilts, plus a greats selection of fabrics to make your own. Let’s start with the fabrics.
There are well over 5,000 bolts of quilting fabric on hand here, and selection includes dozens of possibilities for Stack-n-Whack. I showed one group how to use the design tool at www.oneblockwonder.com/design-helper/, and then had the fun of watching the three of them pulling out bolt after bolt of fabric and checking out how it would look as a One Block Wonder. Then I shared my phone app (Apple’s KaleidoLens) for seeing how things look stacked, kind of like the old folding mirror, and it got even more exciting. Last I looked they had a stack of bolts to be cut! There are also smaller prints, solids, and blenders. Batiks and Civil War are well represented, and wool is on hand for those of you who, unlike me, can touch wool and breathe. Wide backs, including cuddle and Minkee, are also on hand. Kaffe Fassett, Ruby Star, and Tula Pink are here, as are beautiful wonderful panels. Flannels, flat folds and team fabrics round out the selection.
Most samples, and there are many of them, have kits available. There is a card on them indicating a kit, so if you don’t see a card but want a kit, do ask any one of the staff members. Given a pattern, you can build your own kit if you wish. The Judy Neimeyer quilts are paper pieced, so you’d definitely need a pattern and generally a class. As I mentioned, the outside displays change daily, and if it’s raining, they stay inside.
There is a large selection of precuts, including Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, Candies (2 1/2″ squares), and Layer Cakes. Patterns are displayed in several areas, so do keep an eye out for them.
The shop offers edge to edge long arm quilting; please call for pricing and lead times. I would plan to be here for at least thirty to forty-five minutes to enjoy everything.
