I spent a few days in the Lancaster area – the heart of Pennsylvania’s Amish and Mennonite areas. Talk about quilt shops! This is one of five stores owned by the descendants of Harry Good, who founded the first store a very long time ago. This one is located just a short distance from US 222. Think of it as an old time country store, with everything from clothing to lawn and garden, as well as a great selection of fabrics. The quilters can shop for fabric while the hunters and fishermen get their licenses. How cool is that?
There are well over 1,500 bolts of quilting cotton, not to mention Tropical Breeze dress fabrics, fleece, and flannels. Let’s focus on quilting cottons. There is a lot of Moda, in solids and blenders, as well as some wonderful tone on tones. Large and small prints are on hand, as is Grunge in plain and dots. Check out the Layer Cakes, Jelly Rolls, and Charm Packs, some with yard goods to match. There is a selection of cotton flat-folds as well. Don’t miss the assortment of panels, as well as books and patterns. Batting is available cut to standard quilt sizes,. and there are at least fifty different wide backings. If you enjoy crazy quilting, there is a nice selection of laces and trims – or you can use them on clothing.
There are samples displayed here and there, particularly on the wall across from the fabrics, but look up! They are hung from the mezzanine. The patterns used is pinned to the samples, making it easy to find what you would need to make one of your own. The young woman running the fabric department was quite knowledgeable and can more than likely answer any questions you have on patterns or quilting.
I would plan to be here for at least thirty to forty minutes, longer if you start browsing the rest of the store and get distracted. Yes, I did!! I was here over two hours; the shop was fascinating.
