The Scrappy Apple Quilts & More Winchester, Virginia

Located just under two miles from Interstate 81 in eastern Virginia, this fun shop is a great break from a long drive. Owner Kelley Bova and her staff were just having way too much fun when I stopped in, and according to her customers, this is normal. Miss Kelly opened the shop in 2010 when several local shops closed, and she needed a place to get fabric.

The rest is, as they say, history. Folks as young as eight and as old as – we won’t say – have learned to sew and quilt here, and the fun continues.

If you need a place to buy quilting fabric, why not get over 2,000 bolts and share the fun with your friends and neighbors? Fabrics are grouped by color, with fat quarters stored above or below the bolts where possible. There are solids and blenders, and tone on tones. Large and small prints are on hand, as are batiks and Civil War reproduction fabrics. Don’t miss the wonderful wide backings in large prints and visual solids (these “read” as a solid from a distance). There are panels and children’s prints. Just for fun, check out the bolts with a button tucked in the folds. These have been in the shop less than a month, but they are where they belong color wise so you can match them with whatever was already on hand. Don’t forget to check out the Layer Cakes, Charm Packs, and Jelly Rolls.

Check out the back room where there are loads of samples, and more fabric! There are patterns available for the samples, and some also have kits. There are also Cuddle kits on hand, and a nice selection of three yard quilt kits and patterns for quilts of all sizes.

If you are looking for any of the Creative Grid rulers, check here. The selection is wonderful.

The shop is a dealer for Janome sewing machines and long arm systems, so do take some time to check these out while you’re visiting. Threads to go with all of the wonderful embroidery machines and patterns are on hand as well. Do also check out the pattern collection! I would plan to be here for at least thirty to forty-five minutes.

  1. The Scrappy Apple is one of my favorite quilt shops! I no longer live in Virginia but will visit whenever I get a chance. Kelley and her staff are the best!
