Located just under two miles from Interstate 44, this business truly is a family affair. It was started by the grandparents, and there are both children and grandchildren involved in running the business at this time. There is also a great-grandchild spending days at the shop “growing up in the business” while Mom runs quilting machines, among other things.
Owner Gail Bush started the shop in 1990. The business expanded, and the decision to purchase the 112 year old Petroleum Building in downtown Chickasha was made in 1993. The building is about half of the block, and the shop is the entire second floor.
Don’t worry – there is an elevator for folks like me who struggle with stairs. There are also stairs for the more nimble or determined visitors.
As you would expect, there is a lot of fabric here. Solids and blenders, Grunge in plain, dots, and stars, and plenty of tone on tone. There are wonderful large prints, as well as smaller prints. Panels are available, and if matching fabrics were offered, you’ll find them here. Don’t miss the batiks, or the room that is all holidays – Christmas, Fall, patriotic fabrics. There are M&S Aboriginals, Kaffe Fassett, and Ruby Starr collections. Overall, there are over 5,000 bolts on handJelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, and Charm Packs are available. Then there are over seven hundred wide backings available, with widths from 108″ to 118″, giving this shop the largest inventory of wide backings in Oklahoma (their claim), is not the country (my claim). I have been in over 350 shops at this point and I have never seen this many wide backings on hand. Don’t miss the 90″ Minkee in many wonderful prints.
Samples are made in house, as well as the kits that are available for 90% of the samples. There are a lot of samples on display. I found myself doubling back to recheck the samples in each room – the fabric distracted me! The shop is laid out in a loop, so you can walk from room to room and see everything.
The shop will also cut, piece, quilt, and bind your custom quilt to your specifications, so if you need a quilt but don’t have time, check this option out.
The Long Arm side of the business is Quilts by Gail, and has expanded to four long arm systems in house. Please contact the shop for pricing and lead times. Tops and backings are routinely ironed before being loaded on the machine as part of their process. Hand quilting is also available. Please contact the shop for details on these services. I would plan at least forty minutes to an hour here to see all of the fabrics and admire all of the samples.
