Rushin’ Tailor’s Quilt Alaska Skagway, Alaska

Skagway is located in the southern “panhandle” of Alaska – you need to cut through Canada from the northern section to get there, but it is also the main location to get a ferry to Juneau. Owner Trish McGee opened this delightful shop in 1989, and has been serving local quilters and visitors ever since. The shop is an easy walk from the cruise docks, so if you are cruising Alaska do stop in!

Fabrics here are very Alaskan themed, with many of them being custom made batiks with moose, whales, mosquitos, wolves, bears, and other Alaskan wildlife depicted, designed by artists native to Alaska. There are also solids, tone on tones, and some wonderful blenders. If you don’t care to mix batiks and standard cottons, there are some batiks that work well as blenders, and some regular cottons that are also great themed prints. Children’s prints and flannel are also are available. Don’t miss the panels – there are over 100 to choose from, with samples neatly numbered and stock packaged so you can find them easily. Charm Packs are also available. There are over 2,500 different bolts of fabric here, so you’re sure to find at least one – or a dozen! – that need to come home with you. The shop doesn’t carry wide backings, but they do carry backing kits in various sizes. They also carry Sashiko Embroidery kits.

Cuddle kits, quilt kits, and bag kits are here, all assembled in house. Check out the wonderful samples displayed throughout the shop, and pick up a kit for any you’d like to make when you get home. Of course, you can also buy just the pattern and create your own kit to match your decor. If you’re a little hesitant, the staff will happily guide your selections! I would plan to spend at least thirty to forty-five minutes here.
