Quilts For U Soldotna, Alaska

When you’re driving down the Sterling Highway and pass a sign along the road pointing to a quilt shop, what do you do? If you’re me, you hang a U-turn at the first safe place and backtrack to see what’s there!

This delightful shop is run by retired schoolteacher Donna Weeks, and has taken over her garage and then some. She is an avid quilter, and generally has at least one Block of the Month going. You can join the fun by mail; the current one is available in two color waves and started in September – you still have time to catch up! Details are available on the website. Please call the shop number if there is no one there during stated open hours, and she’ll be right out.

You wouldn’t think a converted garage would have a lot of fabric, but there are over 1,000 bolts on hand here. Many are displayed sideways on vertical racks to save floor space. There are wonderful wide backs, batiks, and large and small prints, including M&S Australian Aboriginal fabrics. Don’t bypass the solids, blenders, and tone on tones, which compliment the prints wonderfully! A nice selection of Layer Cakes, Jelly Rolls, and Charm Packs is also on hand. There are also fat quarter packs and kits for complete quilt tops.

There are wonderful samples, as well as a shelf full of completed quilts for sale. If you need a gift and have run out of time to make it yourself, do check these out. Miss Donna was quilt happy to unfold them so I could see the entire quilt, and they are beautiful. There are also two mascots, Isabela and Buddy Valentine – please ask before petting. You can also ask Miss Donna to put them in the back if they worry you.
