I found another giant Bernina sewing machine! Located just about twenty miles south of Interstate 80 after a wonderful drive through Pennsylvania farm country, this fun shop has lots of fabric and lots of machines. Owner Leon Hoover is the son of the founders, and the shop has been serving the local community since 1987. The current shop is over 7,000 square feet of fabric and machines, plus classrooms. The shop started with machines and has added fabric over the years.
This is the place I saw the Bernina Air thread serger work. It uses compressed air to thread, so you aren’t trying to get tweezers around the needles to get the thread where it needs to be. I had seen the machine at another shop, but didn’t realize what air threading meant – my fault for not asking! If I had not just bought a serger, I would be sorely tempted… The shop carries the full line of Bernina machines, and also has a long arm system in house that can be rented after a class on proper operation. There is also a great selection of fabrics here, with over 150 panels, and fabrics to match. With over 4,000 bolts on hand, plan at least twenty to thirty minutes to look at them all. There is a patriotic section, solids and blenders, tone on tones, and some wonderful batiks. Large and small prints are available, and there is a great section of woodland prints to go with the wildlife panels. There are also wide backings, and Cuddle in 60″ widths. Don’t miss the Charm Packs, Layer Cakes, and Jelly Rolls! There is also a nice selection of bag samples and kits to make them.
Samples are on display throughout the shop. There was a class in session while I was there, working on the quilt at the left. I’ve see the pattern called saw teeth and mountains. It all depends upon how the blocks are made and arranged, but the technique doesn’t change. Kits are available for the majority of the samples, and classes are available for many of them. Patterns are also available. Need help picking fabrics? Just ask.
