Frye’s Sweeper & Sewing Center State College, Pennsylvania

This is the sister shop to the original store by the same name in Altoona, Pennsylvania, that we visited last Thursday. Located less than a mile from US 322 / Interstate 99,if you are visiting Penn State University’s main campus, you need to make time to stop here as well. Google Maps will take you to the back of the building, where the entrance in not… You actually need to make your left turn off of Evergreen Lane between the two buildings, across from the Hampton Inn, rather than after the second building. You can also turn at the sign pictured at the left; the entrance will be straight ahead on the right. Owned by Robert Frye, the son of the original owner, this store also employs the third generation. Mr. Frye’s father started selling sweepers and sewing machines door to door back in 1945, so there is over 70 years of experience in house here.

This store has slightly less fabric than the Altoona store, but with over 450 bolts on hand it is certainly a great stop! There are solids, blenders, and tone on tones. New fabrics are shelved right inside the door, so be sure to check them out. There are some batiks, and some wonderful large and small prints that were not just duplicates of the other store. There was also some wool available. Jelly Rolls and 40 Karat Gems (also 2 1/2″ X Width of Fabric), Charm Packs, and Layer Cakes were on hand, as well as patterns and kits. I would definitely look at those poppies with a One Block Wonder in mind!

Samples are displayed throughout the shop, including this wonderful scalloped place mat. There is a pattern and the pre-printed interfacing to make these. There are also quilts on display. The staff was very helpful in selecting the fabrics I wanted, so if you want to get just the pattern and create your own kit, go for it! If you get stuck, or need a second set of eyes to match colors, simply ask.

Check out the fun wall of sewing machines! Pick a machine, any machine.. This shop carries both Janome and Baby Lock sewing machines, and also sweepers. If you are looking for either, do ask for a demonstration. Repairs for all brands of machines and sweepers are handled in house.

I would plan to spend at least twenty to thirty minutes here.
