This delightful shop has added quilting to an already thriving fabric store that teaches sewing and other fabric arts. Located just four miles from Interstate 40 or two miles from Interstate 240, it is tucked in the corner of Carrefour at Kirby Woods Shopping Center. Google gets you there with no problems. Owner Phyllis Knose has been teaching heirloom sewing and smocking for many years, and has added quilting fabrics and classes over the past couple of years.
Fabrics here range from clothing to quilting. There are solids and blenders, and some really wonderful small prints. One line I had not seen before was Fabric Finders, all 100% cotton and 60″ wide. There are small prints and some really fun plaids. The main thing is that you can buy two yards and back a lap sized quilt, rather than piecing or buying 108″ wide backing and trying to figure out how to use the extra fabric. I picked up backings for a couple of quilts I am working on for donations that will finish at 54 X 64 for a little more than the cost of a yard of 108″ backing. The shop also carries Imperial Broadcloth (think shirts) and Imperial Batiks. Trims are available for both clothing and quilt embellishment, and both DMC six strand and Floche single strand embroidery floss are on hand. Michael Miller and Riley Blake fabric lines are part of the over 500 bolts of fabric on hand. Liberty of London imported lawn is also available. Some of the clothing fabrics are cotton polyester, but they are shelved separately and clearly marked.
As I mentioned, classes include Smocking, Embroidery, and Quilting. There is a Pillow of the Month Club and a Tabletop Quilt of the Month Club, with kits available. Tabletop Quilts were in progress but not yet completed while I was in, but pictures are up on their Facebook page. I have not done smocking for probably 45 to 50 years, but this dress was absolutely beautiful. I’ve seen this art from making a comeback in several shops now, and I must admit I’m glad to see it.
