Oklahoma Quiltworks Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Located just about six miles from Interstate 35, or five miles from the John Kilpatrick Turnpike (toll), this shop was a wonderful find on a beautiful winter afternoon. Owned by Toni Owens, the shop has been serving the local quilting community since 1988 with quilting, English Paper Piecing, and hand embroidery patterns and supplies, not to mention fellowship and plain old fashioned fun!

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was samples everywhere. Every sample has a label with the pattern name, who pieced it, and who quilted it, and they ALL have patterns available. This is the first shop I’ve been in that acknowledges their crafters so publicly, and I must say I found it quite touching. Many of the samples are made by staff members, and one person I chatted with commented that it was rather nice to have her work acknowledged. The other advantage was that I could ask her questions about the pattern – what went well, what went perhaps not so well, and how much she enjoyed making the piece. I can see this a a great advantage when pattern shopping. Some also have kits available, so if you really like the piece, you can make one for yourself. Do also check out the Creative Grids Rulers – the selection is wonderful!

Then there is fabric, lots of fabric! Over 5,000 bolts in house, with solids, tone on tone, blenders including Grunge in plain, dots, and stars, and some wonderful batiks. They also have small and large prints. Kaffe Fassett is well represented, and fat quarters are stored near their parent bolts, so if you just need a little, it is easy to find. Pre-cuts are here by the shelf full. There are also flannels and panels, as well as a nice selection of DMC floss to go with the hand embroidery patterns and kits. If you enjoy Sashiko stitching, there are kits and supplies here for that craft too.

I would plan to be here for at least 30 minutes, just to have time to check out all of the samples and fabrics.
