This delightfully bright shop is located in Heritage Marketplace – look for the giant black and white cow and follow the signs to the door! It is about 40 minutes north of Interstate 76, or 17 miles south of Interstate 471. Owned by Barb Hugel and Donna Brown, it is one of two shops left in the marketplace, and both are quilt shops. I will talk about the other one on Thursday.
The shop features over 500 bolts of brights, batiks, and metallics – no bland colors here! They leave the solids and softer colors to the other shop in the complex. There are blenders like Grunge in plain, as well as batiks and large and small prints, but they are all in bright colors. I saw some wonderful Stack-N-Whack possibilities as well. There are also some wonderful panels and patterns, and a nice selection of wide backs. Classes are generally one on one, so if you want to learn a new skill or technique, this is the place to come and learn, as the owners have at least 35 years of quilting experience between them!
There are great samples to admire here, from full quilts to place-mats, handbags, and table runners. Don’t miss Jerome the Gnome, sitting on the counter and pictured below. These are just a few of the samples you’ll find here, and there are patterns for all and kits for some of them.
They also have a version of a Trip Around the World using rectangles instead of squares and done in batiks, which I had not seen before. I used a traditional Trip Around the World for my son’s quilt when he was 16. Since it is a traditional pattern, it generally shows up in the more traditional fabrics, but it is beautiful in batiks! I also really like the pattern “Falling Stars,” and I have seen it several color schemes – and it looks different every time! I love the “streamer” look under the star blocks.

Plan to spend fifteen to twenty minutes here, longer if you start checking out the prints on the One Block Wonder tool! (http://oneblockwonder.com/design-helper/). Take a picture of the print and see what it looks like as a One BLock Wonder!
Stop back on Thursday as the North American Shop Hop goes next door to check out the other shop in this complex!
I like the idea of using rectangles instead of squares for a Trip Around the World. My bed is a rectangle, the geometry works better.
