When I’m driving across South Dakota and I see a billboard on Interstate 90 for a quilt shop, I have to investigate. This delightful shop is just two miles from the interstate, in the town thatw also hosts the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Owner Sonya Kroupa focuses on quilting, and also offers beads, native art, and jewelry.
Fabric rules the roost here, with over 5,000 bolts on hand all of the time and more when she stocks up for summer tourist season. There are solids, blenders, and a lot of batiks. Large and small prints are available, and there are some wonderful Stack-n-Whack candidates. There are panels, There are fat quarter bundles, jelly rolls, and charm packs. There are also quilt kits and completed quilts.
Unique to this shop is this panel that features the statue “Dignity of the Earth and Sky,” which is located at a rest stop just outside of town, overlooking the Missouri River. I have seen the statue; it is breathtaking in daylight and even more so at night when it is lit up. Take the time while you are in the area to go and see it. These are symbol of honor in the Native American culture, and are gifted on special occasions. This 50-foot high stainless steel statue, designed and made by South Dakota artist laureate Claude Lamphere, depicts a woman in Plains-style dress receiving a Lone Star Quilt.
There are samples scattered throughout the shop, so do look up as you check out the fabric. I really liked to use of the panel in the Cowboy Quilt a the right, and the buffalo could follow me home any time! Long arm services are available, and custom quilts can be ordered – you choose the fabric and the pattern; the shop makes the quilt. Please call the shop for pricing and lead times on these services.
Plan to spend at least 30 to forty minutes here; much longer if you start admiring all of the native artwork! I was here well over an hour.
