Is it a motel or a quilt shop? Actually, it’s both! Located along California Highway 70 on the way to Nevada, this shop is run by Kathy Wiggins, daughter of owners Keith and Susan Morrison. Miss Kathy has worked in the store almost since it opened in 1992, and is wonderfully knowledgeable about fabric, quilting, and the area. Watch for signs for the Sleepy Pines Motel. The shop is part of the motel complex. It started as a gift shop and grew into a quilt shop.
There is a great collection of fabrics here, from glitter and plain Grunge to tone on tones, blenders, and batiks. Some felted wool is available, but very few solids. There is a wonderful selection of prints, large, small, and themed. I saw birds, trees, musical instruments and notes, barns, and many more. However, there are no licensed fabrics are here, so the prices can remain reasonable. Wide backs to complete your project are in stock. all in all, there are over 2,000 bolts of fabric here. Large rick-rack is available, along with many other trims. Layer Cakes, Charm Packs, Jelly Rolls, and Candies (2 1/2″ square packs), as well as patterns to use both the precuts and yardage, are here as well. Where practical, fabrics are sorted by color families, and fat quarters are stocked with the yardage to make them easy to find.
Hand embroidery is very popular in this area, and the shop stocks a selection of supplies to match. There are patterns, floss in all colors, and a lot of examples. I may just have to pick this up again – I used to do a lot of it before I started quilting, Maybe a quilt with embroidered squares? Very portable, so I could work on it while I travel…
There are also many quilt samples throughout the shop, with patterns and in some cases, kits available. You can also make your own kit, and if you need help selection fabrics, just ask.
