Wimmer’s Sewing & Vacuum Layton, Utah

Located just eight miles from Interstate 84, this shop is one of two under the Wimmer’s name. The other is in Ogden, and I will review it later. Both stores are owned by Spencer Carter, the great-grandson in-law of Ace Wimmer, who opened the store in 1922. They have been serving the local community ever since, with the fourth generation now in charge.

With over 1,000 bolts of fabric to choose from, something is sure to catch your eye. There are solids, tone on tome, and blenders. Add to that small prints, and larger prints suitable for Stack-n-Whack. There are also batiks and quilt kits to choose from if you prefer working from a kit.

Wimmer’s is a major sewing machine outlet, in addition to a selection of vacuum cleaners. They are licensed for Baby Lock, Husqvarna Viking, and Simplicity machines. Models range from a starter machine to embroidery machines to log arm quilting systems are available. There is also a great selection of sewing machine cabinets and furniture, custom designed to fit the machines. The shop also repairs all models in house.

Don’t miss the great selection of samples on display throughout the shop. They vary from complex like the one at the right to simpler patterns. There are also three dimensional embroidery samples, like the umbrella shown below. Although I don’t have an embroidery machine, the more of these I see the more tempting it gets!

Plan to spend 20 to 30 minutes in this store, more if you want to check out the machines and furniture.
