Located in The Square Plaza less than a mile from Interstate15, and home of Drewel, the purple hedgehog, this unique shop is a great detour if you are anywhere near the area. After all, any hedgehog is a pincushion’s best friend! Owner Julia Sim is a computer geek turned quilter, and has filled her shop with a great array of colorful fabrics.
There are over 3,000 bolts of fabric to look through, from solids and blenders to Minky, Kaffe Fassett, flannels, and a nice collection of patriotic prints. There is grunge in plain and dots, and a whole wall – at least 1,000 bolts – of batiks. Tone on tone in white and ivory, and small and large prints complete the picture. Fabrics are sorted by color family to make matching to prints really simple. Don’t miss the selection of wide backs to complete your project, not to mention Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, and Layer Cakes. There is also clothing fabric, for those of us who sew both quilts and clothing.
The shop has a certified Judy Niemeyer instructor who comes in a teaches classes. I love the look of these quilts, but I don’t have the patience to make one. I have done some paper piecing, and my sister did one and it came out beautifully, but I’m not there yet…
These are just a few of the samples hung around the shop. Most have kits and patterns, so feel free to get the kit or make one of your own. There are also Kimberbell embroidery patterns – and fabrics! Did you know Kimberbell had it’s own fabric line? They are really nice and make wonderful backgrounds and accents for the embroidery designs.
Pfaff Sewing Machines are sold here, with Pfaff certified repair in house. All brands are repaired here, so if your baby is in need of a repair or tune-up, please call for more information.
Edge to edge long arm quilting is done in house as well. The machine is out on the sales floor, so you can watch it run – and get totally mesmerized if you aren’t careful!! Do allow yourself 30 to 40 minutes to enjoy this shop.
