Located just four miles from Interstate 376 in the South Hills section of Pittsburgh, this dynamic shop has been serving the Pittsburgh area for 27 years. I bought my first Viking here when it was located in the North Hills. It then moved inside JoAnn Fabrics for a time, then owner Gloria Horn moved to the South Hills and started carrying Baby Lock machines.
The most unique thing about this shop is that it has its own app on Apple and Google Play, under the name of “Gloria Horn Sewing Studio.” They do a live Facebook show and sale every Thursday , and you can see it on the app if you don’t have Facebook. You can also check out previous shows, which include demonstrations of patterns and techniques, done by both Gloria and the 20 – 30 year old clerks that are lending their own artistic talents to the mix. This is the first of the over 160 shops I’ve visited that has an app.
Beyond that, there is the fabric. There are over 3,000 bolts on hand, and offerings include matching yardage, layer cakes, and charm packs. Start with the solids and blenders, Northcott Artisan, Grunges in regular and dots, and toweling. Then there is Kaffe Fassett, Bloomington Fabrics, and a lot of Moda. Upstairs are Batiks and the Bargain Room.
As mentioned before, the shop carries Baby Lock machines. There is a great selection, from basic sewing to top of the line embroidery systems. There is a great thread selection for embroidery, as well as Kimberbell Patterns. Downstairs is machine training, Accuquilt Go supplies, and the in house machine repair shop.
Samples and kits are available throughout the store. Most kits are assembled in house, and when you are in line to check out – look up!! There are samples on the ceiling, since the walls ran out of room.
Plan forty-five minutes to an hour here to see everything.
