The Wooden Spool is located just about one and one half miles from Interstate 70. Owner Kristina Verdeyen has had the shop since 2013, when she purchased it from her aunt, who ran the shop from 1998-2013 as Angie’s Nine Patch -and that name is still in the window.
Prior to that is was the Dust Quilt Shop, which started as a long arm business run by Mrs. Dust, who still does quilting from her home. Aunt Angie still makes a lot of the shop samples. The shop carries over 4,000 bolts of fabric, ranging from Grunge in solids and dots to batiks, novelties, and children’s prints. Solids and blenders are sorted by color, which makes matching to a print really easy. Various designers are represented, including the Blossom line, Michael Miller, Riley Blake and Stonehenge by Northcott. There is a great selection of patriotic fabrics and over 100 different wide backings. Don’t miss the Holiday Room!
This collection of panels is stunning. If you are looking for a way to honor a service person in you life, please consider using one of these as the centerpiece in you quilt or wall hanging.
There are a lot of samples available for inspiration and learning, and most have kits available. Patterns are displayed throughout the shop as well. The staff is more than willing to help you select fabrics if you are still learning, and of course the customers get involved as well! One of my favorite things when visiting a shop is to help match fabric for someone and hear what they plan to make with it. So many folks have helped me and I love to pass it on.
Finally, don’t miss the wall of thread, particularly if you have an embroidery machine! Colors of every shade and hue, and next to that a rack of rulers. There are also cross stitch and hand embroidery patterns by Jack Dempsey. Plan to be here for 30 to 45 minutes – I was here almost an hour and a half just looking at things and trying to stay in my budget!
