Located just three miles from Interstate 75, Betty’s Quilt Shop is primarily a machine and hand quilting service, but there are over 500 bolts of fabric housed here as well. Owner Norma Schrimpsher is the daughter of Betty, the shop’s original owner. The business started as a quilting service, and added fabrics later. They’ve been in this location for 18 years.
There are several long arm systems in the main room, and the largest can handle a quilt up to 140 inches wide. Having struggled to quilt one for my daughter that was 117 inches wide – on a long arm with a 126 inch table – I can immediately see the advantage to that width! It would have been so much easier on this machine…
There are a lot of samples on the walls in the main work room. Most are on loan to demonstrate the types of quilting available, but some are for sale. Take to the time to enjoy the workmanship while you are in the store. The shop generally has a two week turn for quilting, but this can stretch a bit when they run a special. They average 80 to 100 finished quilts a month, and have a specialty sewing machine to do the binding from rolls of flat material. Ask to see it – it is fascinating!
I did mention fabric. There is backing material and standard width bolts, in solids and prints. There are also some patterns, and the shop will continue to hold classes on piecing as soon as they are permitted. They also provide Memory and T-shirt Quilts services.
The shop is a Janome dealer and has an in house repair shop and machine cleaning service. Plan to spend 30 to 40 minutes here, looking at the sample quilts as well as the fabric. There is a shop mascot; she was still fairly new from the pound and quite shy when I was in, but I’m sure she’ll warm up over time – or continue to hide in the back room when company comes in!
