NOTE: This is a Chocolate Free Shop – the owner is dangerously allergic!
Just three miles from Interstate 75 in Cleveland, Tennessee, is a wonderful shop called Hyderhangout. Owned by Susan Hyder, this shop was still working on reopening after the COVID crisis when I visited.
They have been doing a LOT of mail order during the closing, but changing gears and getting things reorganized to accept visitors is well underway.
This is easily one of the more eclectic shops I’ve visited, and the variety and types of fabric available are amazing. There are at least 4,500 bolts of quilting fabric, including Fossil Ferns (one of my favorites), batiks, grunge, prints, solids, and blenders.
Don’t miss the wild animal skin prints. If you are looking for giraffe skin, leopard skin, tiger skin, or a combination, they are here. In addition, there are some mixed wild animal prints – lions and tigers and giraffes, oh my!
There is a section of kids prints, so if you need to make a quilt for a baby or younger child, check these out. Both yardage and panels are available, and there are coordinating prints for the panels.
As you head toward the back, there is a Dressmaker Fabric Room, with a great selection of dressmaker fabrics. There is also a Costume Fabric Room. Don’t think Halloween here; think costuming a Shakespearean play or your local high school musical. I wish I’d known about this place when my daughter was making costumes! There is a rack of assorted trims for those finishing touches that are so important for period costumes, and often so hard to find. There is also a selection of upholstery fabric to enjoy.
While you are looking at everything else, don’t miss the patterns and notions; lots of scissors, rulers, gadgets, and templates. There are also samples to enjoy throughout the shop. Hyderhangout also does sewing machine repair in house, including Featherweights. If you know what parts you need, you can order through the shop and save on shipping. Call and arrange to bring your baby in if it is having issues.
Plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes here. Stop back on Monday as the North American Shop Hop continues the Eastern Tennessee tour!
