You will find HomeGrown HomeSewn just a couple of miles from Interstate 75 Exit 31 on the outskirts of Cincinnati, Ohio. When Google says you are there – drive down the hill and around back. Owned by parents Tom and Diane Schultz and daughter and son-in-law Abbey and Caleb Matthews, this shop is a wonderful place for all ages and skill levels to find sewing tools and projects.
There is a lot of community involvement here. Do you want to make a quilt for the local NICU? Leave a deposit to cover materials, take the kit home and sew it, and get your deposit back when you bring the finished quilt back. If you choose not to quilt it, bring back the finished top, back, and batting instead. The shop offers long arm service, so they will do the quilting. Many folks have had the same deposit rotating for a long time, taking a new kit instead of the deposit back. Do you have daughters in American Heritage Girls (AHG)? Stop in and see what is available for completing their Sewing Badge – and 5% goes back to the organization.
With all of that going on – don’t miss the fabric! There are multiple lines of blenders here – and I mean the whole line! The shop also carries the Crayola Kaleidoscope line, and Ruby Star Spatter. There is also grunge, about 170 different colors, and Farm Girl Vintage by Laurie Holt. If you are trying to match any print, this is the place to go.
Each room has a theme. The children’s room has child friendly prints, as well as kits suitable for beginners. There are also kits for doll sleeping bags, aprons, and a pillow kit for the AHG Sewing Badge. This is done with large stitch quilting. Who can resist the farm animals with babies?
There is a Christmas Rom, so you can get ideas while you still have time to finish projects before the Christmas rush starts. There are patterns and kits available for inspiration, or you can follow your own ideas. With over 4,000 bolts of fabric in the shop, you are sure to find something that just has to follow you home!
If you were a fan of the old Thimbleberry line with the rich browns and earth tones, check out the primitive room. Don’t miss the old bathtub fill of goodies! There is also a section of prints, and yes, some would make wonderful Stack-n-Whack projects! That bolt facing out in the picture below was really tempting…
There are numerous classes and patterns available; please check these out online. The Block of the Month is the Miss Diane’s design. Every door has rows of patterns hung on it, as well as patterns scattered among the shelves near the fabric you might use to make them. There are also plenty of samples to see. Plan to spend at least 30 to 45 minutes here.
